Dapper Dan: The Harlem Pioneer of Hip-Hop Luxury Fashion

Dapper Dan, born Daniel R. Day on Aug 8, 1944, in Harlem, NYC, is an American fashion designer and haberdasher who built a career reworking luxury logos for clients from Mike Tyson to Jay-Z before his 125th St boutique closed in 1992, later returning to mainstream fashion through a 2017 partnership with Gucci.

Daniel R. Day, known professionally as Dapper Dan, was born on Aug 8, 1944, in Harlem, NYC, and built a career as a fashion designer and haberdasher. From 1982 to 1992 he ran Dapper Dan’s Boutique on 125th St, a shop that drew a roster of prominent clients including Mike Tyson, LL Cool J, Eric B. & Rakim, Salt-N-Pepa, and Jay-Z. The boutique closed after Fendi and then-U.S. Attorney Sonia Sotomayor brought a lawsuit over his unauthorized use of luxury logos.

Following the closure, Dapper Dan continued working underground, and beginning in 1999 he outfitted Floyd Mayweather. His influence resurfaced publicly in 2017 amid controversy over a Gucci jacket that resembled a design he had made in 1989 for Diane Dixon. That episode led to a partnership with Gucci, and in 2018 the two opened the Dapper Dan of Harlem atelier together.

In 2020, he was named to Time’s 100 Most Influential People. He went on to collaborate with Gap in 2023, and in 2025 he joined the Met Costume Institute host committee.
